IDEX Université Grenoble Alpes : Interdisciplinarity to foster science and progress

Inter- and multidisciplinarity allow us to meet and exceed modern scientific challenges, especially those at the crossroads of different disciplines, allowing these fields of study to advance the frontiers of knowledge. One of the major goals of Univ. Grenoble Alpes to make effective progress in science, knowledge and innovation, while preventing each discipline from becoming isolated.

This ambitious task is not new to the Grenoble region: it has been one of the fundamental aspirations of the area since 2013 with the PEPS (Projets Explorations Premier Soutien) call for proposals, and even before with the creation of authentically multidisciplinary laboratories on the international level.

Call for CDP projects (Cross Disciplinary Program)

This call for proposals, which began in May 2016, saw 7 highly exceptional projects accredited. On the 3rd June alone, we received 52 expressions of interest during a scientific assembly that saw 300 participants. Thanks to an active support effort, largely headed by the research departments, 30 proposals in total were filed. All project leaders, along with their teams, should be recognized for the quality of submissions.
On the 8th and 9th December 2016, our scientific community took part in 16 project hearings, with presentations of a very high standard and an audience of 80 to 100 persons per session.

7 successful projects with an envelope of 11.9M euros

Long term effects

The effects of this call to proposals are already apparent, as researchers and professor-researchers from diverse communitiesand disciplines were able to meet and exchange with each other. These meetings would have been highly improbable otherwise.
The transformative effect of Univ. Grenoble Alpes has initiated a dynamic that has only just begun.
