This research front focuses on bringing solutions that address new emerging challenges in energy management at the occupant level, taking into consideration future issues such as demand response, auto-consumption, and auto-production.
Many technical solutions have been proposed, but very little attention has been paid to occupants, to their practice and idiosyncrasies, tacit knowledge, needs, preferences and personal motivations. In general, it is considered that energy management can be based on measurement and computation with very few contributions from occupants.
In this project, it is hypothesized that sustainable practices will emerge from the virtuous circle of appropriate interactions between the human stakeholders, and the interactive energy management system augmented with computational capabilities. A new paradigm will be investigated: a user-centric energy management, where users’ expectations and tacit knowledge will drive the search for solutions computed dynamically thanks to a flexible energy model of the living areas. One key research question is what kind of process can trigger virtuous behaviors and practices.
Addressed topics are:
- Characterization of the needs for end-users of energy in the different contexts
- Design of new interactive services (analysis and explanation engines, etc.) to support occupants in everyday decisions
- Design of prototypes of persuasive graphic user interfaces for interactive services
- Experimentation of the interactive energy service prototypes
