Components and materials: specifications for a proper integration into systems

Research Front 5

Participants: LMGP (Leader Daniel Bellet), G2ELAB, CEA LITEN, INEEL, IMEP-LAHC, LEPMI, SIMAP

The main three themes developed in the framework of RF5 of Eco-SESA project will be devoted to:

  1. production of electricity through innovative solar cells
  2. saving of energy by using highly efficient lighting devices made of innovative LEDs
  3. storage of energy from hydrogen (as briefly illustrated below)

Broad and strong skills exist in the scientific community of Grenoble in these fields. Strong couplings between academic and industrial partners spanning a wide range of TRLs and many synergies through Eco-SESA project should foster cross-fertilizations.
In particular, the integration of the energy needs compatible with eco-district design requirements will be done in strong collaboration with the other research fronts to address the whole line from the development of new materials and technology to their overall impact assessed in respects to urban context and practical uses for inhabitants and stakeholders.

In particular, the integration of the energy needs compatible with eco-district design requirements will be done in strong collaboration with the other research fronts to address the whole line from the development of new materials and technology to their overall impact assessed in respects to urban context and practical uses for inhabitants and stakeholders.

Thin film solar cells: For both indoor and outdoor photovoltaics, the main research aims at working on efficient & low cost solar cells with abundant and eco-friendly materials and processes.

Prototype of an efficient white LED: The key points concern cost, life-time, visual comfort, efficiency, and recyclability using new materials & technologies.

Hydrogen storage: One of the main idea is to develop a reliable and energy-efficient hydrogen purifier/compressor operating at low temperature, compatible for an eco-district.

The production of energy will be focused on solar cells technology by coupling both experimental and modelling approaches. The focus on the efficient usage of energy will concern solid-state lighting by developing original, low cost and efficient LED devices. The storage will rely on the power-to-gas (hydrogen) and on the possibility to combine electrochemical compression with metal hydride-based thermal compression to achieve hybrid, highly-efficient, safe and silent H2 compressors. All these objectives will be addressed through multidisciplinary approaches in materials science, engineering, device integration, modelling and social sciences.
